Jon Crowley of UTV Guide already had a capable rock crawler in his 2021 Kawasaki Teryx KRX 1000 eS. He wanted more clearance over ledges and better low-speed gearing while keeping the 35-inch tire size that worked for him at Sand Hollow and Moab. At our Hurricane, Utah shop, UTV Pros helped take the existing build further with a UTV Pros cage and a package of SuperATV driveline and suspension upgrades.
What UTV Pros Added to the KRX
- UTV Pros cage
- SuperATV 4-inch Dual-Idler GDP Portals with 15-percent gear reduction
- SuperATV high-clearance rear trailing arms
- SuperATV billet high-clearance radius rods
- SuperATV Rhino 2.0 axles
- SuperATV forward-offset boxed A-arms
Why 4-Inch Portals and 15-Percent Reduction?
The portal boxes move the wheel hubs below the axle centerline, giving the KRX more clearance beneath the driveline and chassis. The 15-percent reduction at the hubs helps compensate for the taller 35-inch tires and gives Jon the low-speed control he wanted on ledges. Jon lowered the suspension ride height to offset some of the lift and reported about 2.5 inches of additional clearance at the skid plate.
The rear trailing arms and billet radius rods improve clearance around the rear suspension, while the forward-offset front A-arms help make room for the tires. The Rhino 2.0 axles round out the driveline package.
From the Shop to the Rocks
On Cliff Hanger in Moab, Jon reported that the KRX felt more planted on uneven rock and that the lower effective gearing helped it creep through technical sections. He also put the setup through a mix of faster trails and rock crawling at Sand Hollow. Read his firsthand Kawasaki KRX 1000 Stage 2 report on UTV Guide for the full ride impressions.
