Riding Sand Hollow: A Southern Utah UTV Prep Checklist

Sand Hollow is one of the best places in the country to run a UTV: red sand, slickrock, and dunes in one park, minutes from our shop in Hurricane. It also chews up machines that show up unprepared. Here is the checklist we walk through with riders before a big day out.

Before you leave the garage

  • Set tire pressure for the day, lower for sand, and carry a pump.
  • Look over your belt, fluids, and air filter.
  • Test your lights and whip.
  • Re-check the bolts on your bumper, cage, and skid plates.

A quick pre-trip inspection at the shop catches the small stuff before it strands you on the dunes.

Air down for the sand

Dropping tire pressure floats your machine on soft sand instead of digging in. Air back up before you hit slickrock so you do not pinch a bead. The right tires make a bigger difference out here than most riders expect.

Pack recovery gear

Everyone gets stuck at Sand Hollow eventually. Carry a tow strap, a small shovel, and a tire plug kit at minimum. A buddy and a charged phone are worth more than any accessory.

Respect the heat

Southern Utah sun is no joke. Bring more water than you think you need, start early in summer, and keep an eye on your machine's temps in deep sand.

Know before you go

Sand Hollow is a state park, so bring your day-use fee and make sure your machine is registered for OHV use in Utah. If the main dunes are busy, the trails around Hurricane and Sand Mountain are right there.

Ride local, break local

The nice thing about riding here: if something lets go on the trail, we are just up the road in Hurricane. Swing by or book service and we will get you back out.
